When British designer Damian Williamson created the successful William upholstered furniture series for Zanotta in 2010, it marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company’s contemporary collection: beautiful and accessible products, aligned with current aesthetic trends and carefully balanced in terms of quality and price. The request to design a new bed stemmed from this direction: Talamo was born.
“Zanotta asked me to design a comfortable and simple bed, one that was solid and high-quality, without making the structure feel heavy. It also had to involve the assembly of the fewest possible components. Starting from its ‘cousin’ William came naturally: I brought back the polished aluminium alloy feet that give it a light and ultra-modern appearance; together with the company’s Technical Department, I developed a perimeter steel frame with curved beech slats. And a simple upholstered, removable headboard.”
Zanotta’s Technical Department confirms: “The challenge was to create a bed that maintained the requirements of the best models, while eliminating accessory elements that would increase costs. The ergonomic slats, for example, are designed with a single row support system: this avoids additional costs that would not substantially improve a well-designed support structure. A polyurethane edge around the steel frame proved to be the ideal solution for attaching the fabric upholstery.”
A fine example of achieving objectives in a time when investments must be carefully measured, while still aiming for a completely Italian-made product, high-quality materials and a well-executed design. As the designer explains:
“Talamo does not try to be something it is not. It is a bed clearly connected to the William collection and therefore modern, with the details and proportions that made its predecessor (the sofa) so appreciated. A project designed to include only the elements that make a bed a comfortable and sturdy platform on which to dream, rest and make love.”
